On Saturday December 15th the Windsor Valiants Juvenile Basketball team began their season at Whitmore Lake High School at the 12th Annual FAAST Holiday Kickoff Classic. The girls ended the weekend as silver medalist playing the 76ers of Saline (Team Todd) in the championship game. The Valiants were led by weekend MVP Reem Chelbi who plays her high school basketball at Vincent Massey Secondary School, where she was a part of both Massey junior girl’s WECSSAA and SWOSSAA championships this season. The Valiants also had strong performances from Nneke Lockhart (Kennedy Clippers) and Nefertiti Butler (Walkerville Tartans).

These girls over the past five years have been a part of the Windsor Valiants house league program. Last year girls from the house league program in grades 7-10 created this travel team to continue their basketball careers past the house league level as they went into high school. These girls have had a variety of basketball experiences over the past year and half while playing for the Valiants. This group of girls have played on the court at the WFCU Centre prior to a Windsor Express game, they have played an exhibition game at St. Clair College’s Sportsplex at the 2017 Windsor Valiants Girls High School All-Star game, HYPE Athletics gym in Dearborn, Michigan and they have plated several games at the new home of the Valiants, which is the old Forster gym on Windsor’s west side.

The juvenile girls have helped lead their high school teams this season with three WECSSAA Champions and two SWOSSAA champions on this team. Two of the juvenile girls played on the Kennedy Clippers senior girls’ team who were WECSSAA champions this year. Lockhart and Nyra-Brown Henderson were a member of the Kennedy Clippers senior team as a grade 10 and grade 9 athletes, with Lockhart being in the starting lineup. Other schools that are represented on this team include: Fatima Hamad and Aisha Mazloum from the Massey Mustangs (Hamad did not play on the Mustangs team this year), Manar Chebli from the Northwood Knights, representing the Sandwich Sabres are Olivia Carter and Samira Taha, and from the Walkersville Tartans include Olivia Austin-Ghrayeb.

The Valiants Juvenile team will be back in action at the Foster Community Hub January 19th when they take on two teams from the Sarnia Valhalla Basketball Club.

Former Valiant and new St. Clair Saint Noor Bazzi will be the first to wear a hijab at the OCAA level. This has inspired others to consider basketball and sport as an option for them. Come out and support her and her teammates this year at the College. Keep up the great work Noor!!
